Reactors

  • Identify integrity problems with reactor internals and the catalyst bed
  • Determine the uniformity of distribution between the catalyst and feed

Reactors with fixed catalyst beds are a challenge to troubleshoot.  Additionally, the rising demand for low sulfur fuels is adding to the requirement that reactors operate properly and efficiently. Whenever the productivity of a reaction train diminishes, concern builds for problems with the internals or the catalyst in the Reactor. Maintenance costs and lost productivity strongly affect unit profitability, so advanced knowledge about needed repairs to a Reactor is vital. Tracerco has designed techniques that will gather information about fixed bed reactors while they are on line so proper planning can be done.

The most common problem with the Reactor is poor distribution of the feed to the catalyst bed. This can be caused by damage to the distributor, fouling or the distributor or the catalyst bed, and damage to the catalyst particles. Damage to the internals or the catalyst bed can be seen with the Tracerco Tru-Scan® technique.

Some problems with distribution of the liquid or vapor through the reactor may not be apparent in a Tru-Scan®. In those cases, injecting a tracer will yield additional data about the distribution.
