Exchanger Helium Leak Study
Benefits of a TRACERCO Diagnostics™ Helium Leak Study
- Ultra sensitive technique compared to hydro-testing or hand held helium
leak methods
- Can detect leaks in systems that may partially “reseal”
when taken offline due to metal contraction
- Able to pinpoint leaks in individual exchanger tubes allowing fast repair
and vessel turnaround
- Un-reactive with any contaminants remaining in an exchanger under test
- For water sensitive processes a non wetting technique that eliminates
the requirement to dry before returning to service
A TRACERCO Diagnostics™ Helium Leak study offers many benefits
over conventional off-line leak testing methods. The most important relates
to the use of specialist helium mass spectrometry. This ensures optimal
sensitivity when compared to hand held helium devices or different leak
testing methods such as hydro-testing.
The inert nature of helium ensures no adverse reactions with contaminants
remaining within the exchanger. Unlike water, the small atomic size of
helium allows it to permeate through very tiny holes or cracks that may
be missed especially if the leak aperture closes and partially re-seals
when taken off line and allowed to cool.
Off-line testing of heat exchanger tubes is achieved by sealing each
of the tubes using rubber plugs that are supplied by Tracerco, pressurizing
the shell side of the exchanger with helium to a specified test pressure,
and measuring helium content of individual tube using an ultra sensitive
Mass Spectrometer specific to helium.
