Exchanger Neutron Scan
Benefits of a TruTec™ Neutron Backscatter
- Real-time measurements
- Immediate results provided on-site
- Monitoring studies can help prevent potential environmental or
safety incidents

The TruTec™ Neutron Backscatter service is a nifty way to quickly
measure material levels inside vessels and to screen for fouling deposits
on vessel walls or in piping.
Neutron Backscatter uses a source of high energy or “fast”
neutrons coupled with a neutron detector. The neutrons emitted by the
neutron source interact with the hydrogen atoms of the material within
the piece of equipment being surveyed. When the neutron source/detector
tandem is moved in proximity to a vapor/liquid interface such as water
and nitrogen, then a large change in detector response is observed due
to the difference in hydrogen concentration between water and nitrogen.
Thus the technique measures the difference in hydrogen nuclei concentration
between two or more substances or mixtures.
The TruTec™ Neutron Backscatter service is handy for measuring
the liquid level on the shell side of heat exchangers and kettle drums.
If present, interface levels between different substances, such as oil
and water can be determined as well as the presence of foaming. The technique
can be applied to survey for fouling or solids buildup along shell walls
or in the heads of heat exchangers.
