Tru-Scan® - Trayed Column Application

  • Verify tray placement
  • Determine missing or damaged trays
  • Evaluate tray froth heights and liquid levels in downcomers
  • Detect mechanical, rate and process related problems
  • Reduce operating costs and shutdown time

Damaged or missing trays, plugged downcomers, feed problems, and tray fouling are examples of problems with columns that can be diagnosed with a TRU-SCAN®. One scanline taken through the active tray deck (bubbling area) is normally sufficient for diagnosing many operating problems.

A TRU-SCAN® is used to evaluate the mechanical integrity and hydraulic performance of trayed columns by measuring froth levels on tray decks, liquid backup in downcomers, and clarity of liquid/vapor disengagement zones.

Mechanical Problems - A TRU-SCAN® can provide an on-line inspection for column internals. Partial tray damage, buckled or missing tray manways, and severely fouled trays are examples of physical problems that can be detected from scan results.

Rate Related Problems - Weeping, entrainment, and tray flooding often result from design limitations, physical problems, or a combination of these. A TRU-SCAN® can detect each of these problems.

Process Related Problems - Scans can be very helpful in debottlenecking or economizing one or more columns in an operating unit. Performance stabilization will result in extended run times and lower maintenance costs.

TRU-SCAN® technology has a proven track record in assisting with plant start-ups, pre-shutdown planning and operational troubleshooting. The scan results are produced from the tangent to tangent height and can be performed through active areas at different operating rates. Scanline plots can be overlaid to show a comparison of results.

A history of tower scanlines can also be overlaid to compare past and present tower scan results. We have an extensive database of projects undertaken and reference lists of companies that have used TRU-SCAN® technology can be supplied on request.
