Tracerco Instruments™ Training

Tracerco offer an “Introduction into Nucleonic Instrumentation” training course to all of our customers. This two day course, which has both theoretical and practical elements, provides the attendees with a full appreciation of radiological principles, radiological safety and the technology that underpins all of the TRACERCO™ Instruments.

Courses are held regularly at the Tracerco facilities in both Aberdeen and Billingham, although Tracerco has in the past, and continue to, carry out this training course at our customers facilities around the world.

For more details on the course or to discuss the potential for a specific training course for your company, please contact us or alternatively contact us via email; tracerco@matthey.com.

Course Description

Day 1

09.30 Introduction and aims of course

  • Atomic Structure - Brief description of the structure of atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic number, mass number.
  • Isotopes - What are isotopes? Non-radioactive isotopes, natural isotopes, artificial isotopes.
  • Radioactive Decay - Alpha particles, beta particles, gamma-rays, neutrons, half-life.
  • Units of Activity and Energy- Bequerels, electron volts (KeV, MeV).
  • Radiation Detection - GM tubes, scintillation counters, radiation monitors, personal dosimeters.
  • Biological effects of Ionising radiation - Ionising radiation, cell damage, ionising radiations regulations 1999.
  • Radiation Dose Measurements - Grays, Sieverts, body-weighting factors.
  • Hazards of Ionising Radiations - Acute doses, long-term doses, recommended maximum doses.
  • Radiation Protection & Safety - ALARA and ALARP principle, time, distance, shielding effects.
  • Regulations - Ionising Radiations Regulations, licensing, etc.

The above topics will be covered by multimedia presentations, followed by discussion and questions.

  • Nucelonic Installations and Instrument Types - Level alarms, proportional level measurement, density gauges. Principles of operation, design of systems, source sizing, equipment (sources, shielded containers, detectors, control units).

Afternoon of Day One and Day Two

The majority of the course time will be given over to practical work. This will include pre-commissioning checks, instrument calibrations, routine maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair..
