Radiation Protection Supervisor Training

In the UK, Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPS) courses are based on the Health and Safety Executive’s requirements for RPS competency. These courses cover the practical aspects of radiation protection under ‘The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (IRR99)’ as well as environmental compliance with ‘The Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA93)’ and Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010 (EPR’10). The courses are suitable for those working in the Oil, Gas and Chemical industries.

In addition, a NORM Workshop is held following each of these Radiation Protection Supervisor training courses. This includes a number of syndicate and practical exercises that are aimed at enabling delegates to secure compliance with the conditions and limitations of a site’s environmental permit/authorisation. Although optional, those working in the Oil and Gas industry are encouraged to attend, as the workshop expands on the learning from the RPS course and allows specific operational problems/questions to be discussed in an open forum.

Scheduled RPS training courses are regularly held at our offices in Billingham and Aberdeen, UK. Training can be undertaken anywhere in the world, from any of our global offices or at a location selected by you. Bespoke courses are designed to meet individual needs and reflect national legislative requirements of the host country.

The radiation safety training courses have been developed to provide delegates with the knowledge that they need to be able to supervise others working with sources of ionising radiation. We also provide awareness training, which could include site visits, providing delegates with the opportunity to discuss specific issues.

Delegates will gain an understanding of the hazards and risks associated with work involving ionising radiation, which will enable them to undertake risk assessments, develop safe systems of work and to be able to implement contingency programmes identified from such risk assessments.

Each radiation protection course includes training modules on:

  • the properties of ionising radiation
  • units used in radiation protection
  • the biological effects of radiation
  • radiation protection practices
  • risk assessment
  • selection and use of radiation monitors
  • The Radioactive Substances Act 1993,exemption orders & HASS
  • The Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999
  • transport of radioactive materials
  • safe working practice with NORM and the management of NORM waste;
  • safety aspects of nucleonic instrumentation
  • industrial radiography
  • unsealed sources of ionising radiation
