Current legislation establishes a statutory requirement that, as a minimum, all operational radiation monitors are subject to annual inspection and testing. Tracerco provides a professional service for the repair, testing and re-calibration of gamma dose rate and alpha/beta contamination monitors to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
Radiation monitors are retested, and where necessary calibrated, in accordance with the requirements laid down in “The Examination, Testing and Calibration of Portable Radiation Protection Instruments - Measurements and Good Practice Guide,” produced by the National Physical Laboratory. The operation of the Monitor Calibration and Repair Service is accredited to ISO9001:2000 and BS EN 80079-34.
Tracerco personnel involved in radiation monitor testing, repair and calibration are fully trained and supervised by a number of members of staff appointed as Qualified Persons under Regulation 19(3) of the Ionising Radiation Regulations.
Tracerco™ Radiation Contamination Monitors conform to European Standard EN60325:2004 and Tracerco™ Radiation Dose Rate Monitors to EN60846:2004.
Tests involving contamination monitor response to levels of alpha or beta radiation are carried out using a range of large surface area traceable sources of radioactivity. The reference radionuclides for alpha radiation are Americium-241 or Plutonium-239. The reference radionuclides for beta radiation testing are based on a range of beta max values and include Chlorine-36, Carbon-14, Strontium / Yttrium-90 and Promethium-147.
Tests involving instrument response to specified radiation dose rates are carried out on a special calibration facility that allows the instrument to be exposed to a range of radiation dose equivalent values from Caesium-137 and Americium-241. Independent verification of the calibration facility shows that over the full range capability, the Ambient Dose Equivalent Rate deviation from 1/r2 is less than 2% relative for the sources of Caesium-137 and less than 5% for the source Americium-241.
