Tracerco add to its range of monitors with new personal dosimeter

25/05/2011

Leading industrial technology specialist Tracerco, part of the Johnson Matthey group, has added its first ever personal dosimeter to its award-winning range of radiation monitors.

Tracerco revolutionised radiation monitoring when it developed the first ever intrinsically safe contamination and radiation monitor. Intrinsically safe means that it is safe to use in potentially explosive environments. More recently, Tracerco won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for its radiation monitors.

The focus when developing the Tracerco™ Personal Electronic Dosimeter (PED) was to create a device that gave exceptional performance in the most challenging environments, whilst being as simple to use as possible. The monitor is easy to clean and decontaminate due to its lightweight design and smooth clean lines. It is also shock proof so can withstand being dropped and sun readable due to the revolutionary AMOLED screen and is suitable for all level of users.

Until now, Tracerco’s monitors have been primarily developed for the oil and gas industry, which in the main requires them to be intrinsically safe, whilst being robust and weatherproof. However, when developing this device Tracerco’s product development team considered in detail all users who may require personal radiation monitoring devices. This lead to ease of device coming to the fore as a highly desirable factor alongside more usual considerations of being intrinsically safe and robust. The applications the Tracerco™ PED can be used in are:

  • Oil and Gas
  • Emergency Services
  • Nuclear Energy
  • Mining
  • Medical
  • Research and Laboratories.

Tracerco has looked at every aspect of the device to to make it as easy to use and read as possible. This makes it attractive to users where the end user is not necessarily trained to work with radiation day to day. The display system features graph measurements but also a simple picture of a man who fills with colour, depending on the radiation dose received. This has formed the basis of the overall brand for the Tracerco™ PED.

The ease of use doesn’t stop at the external aspects of the Personal Dosimeter itself. The software interface, DoseVision™ has specifically been developed with input from experienced users and those who have never used radiation monitors and the associated software before. The result is a software interface which is intuitive to use; the kind you would expect in the consumer market.

The Tracerco™ PED also comes with a quick start guide which has been edited by the Plain English Campaign to make it easy to understand.

Managing Director Andy Hurst commented:

“The idea behind the device was to make a personal dosimeter which was suitable for challenging environments and would appeal to markets such as first responders, medical and mining.”

“We noted that a lot of Personal Dosimeters currently on the market are complicated to operate, difficult to read with small screens and users continually having to consult a manual.”

“What we have achieved through good design and thoughtful consideration to the uses for the device, is a Personal Dosimeter with mass market appeal globally. The real selling point of our device is the whole package from device to manual is easy to use and understand.”

Tracerco also offers a comprehensive aftersales service for calibration repair and servicing with a rapid turnaround. The testing facilities are to the most rigourous standards for exceptional performance on intrinsically safe devices. Tracerco also offers a wide range of radiation monitors for hire.
